TPK and TPACK

TPACK refers to a way that we put technology into teaching. It stands for Technological Pedagogical And Content Knowledge. I really thought the best illustration was that the overlapping of Technology, Content and Pedagogy. TPK, or Technological Pedagogical Knowledge is just like TPACK, but does not encompass Content.

One really good example is TPACK would be like the video Ellie and I made for Newton's first law. It encompasses the teaching style, knowledge and the content of Newton's first law. TPK, however, is really just knowing how to use what is available to a teacher and making use of it. This could be just knowing how to make a really cool powerpoint.

I chatted with Ellie on Skype and sent a message reminding Mary about this assignment via Facebook.  I like both for different reasons. However, in general, I think I would prefer synchronous chat in general since I get a direct and immediate response from the person I am talking with.  Of course, there are advantages of asynchronous. If the person is hard to get a hold of or just does not have the same time schedule you do, it is nice to be able to send a personalized message. Really, it is just better to communicate and video is the most effective in my opinion. Synchronous, though, wins the battle for preference since it takes care of business right now.
